In a fascinating turn of events, the winner of the 2016 Grand Chess Tour has been crowned, while it is still unclear who will win the London Chess Classic! Going into the last leg of the tour, Nakamura needed to win clear first in London in order to catch Wesley So. After both players drew their respective games, it is now mathematically impossible for Nakamura to catch his compatriot.

After a day full of fireworks, the players were quite conservative in their opening choices. Nakamura utilized Caruana’s preparation that Caruana used against him yesterday to deliver the only decisive result of the round, beating Vachier-Lagrave.

The players came back in a combative mood after the rest day as we saw the most explosive round of the tournament. Not only did this round bring the most decisive games in a single round, but the round also had the most exciting and brilliant games.

The fifth round of the London Chess Classic was an important day for chess theory, as several of the players showcased their world class preparation. Caruana, Anand, and Giri surprised their opponents in the opening, with the last two playing important novelties and opening ideas that caught their opponents off guard and allowed them to draw easily.

​Just like in round 3, Hikaru Nakamura was the only player to deliver a decisive result. After playing a novelty in the opening, Nakamura went on to win a very topsy turvy game. He has now recovered from his tough round 1 loss to Wesley So and still maintains chances to surpass his fellow American to win the tournament and the tour

Round 3 of the London Chess Classic was relatively peaceful, as there was only one decisive result. After losing on his birthday in round 1, Hikaru Nakamura decided to return the favor by defeating Vishy Anand on his special day.

The last leg of the Grand Chess Tour, the London Chess Classic, started with fireworks as the key rivals, Wesley So, in first place and Hikaru Nakamura, the closest behind him, were scheduled to face off in round 1. In a shocking turn of events, Nakamura blundered right out of the opening, gifting his opponent an easy point with the white pieces.
