The best rated Romanian chess player, with 2656 ELO, he is the leader of the Romanian national team, a country that he represented at seven Olympics and eight European Championships. In 2016, at the Baku Olympics, he drew against the World Champion, Magnus Carlsen, and the result helped his team to win against the Norwegian national team. Three years later he won the 34th edition of the traditional Reykjavik Open, where he defeated the Grand Master Alireza Firouzja, currently ranked the 13th in the world.
