David Gavrilescu is a Romanian Grandmaster who has had a storied chess career that began in his childhood. He was the U8 European Vice-Champion (2011), National Junior Champion (U20 2018), and Balkan Champion (2020). More recently, Gavrilescu tied for second-place in the Romanian Chess Championship in 2022 and 2023 and played in the Grand Chess Tour in 2022. Despite being the lowest-rated player in the latter event, Gavrilescu punched above his weight, securing draws from players such as Wesley So and Radosław Wojtaszek in the rapid section, and wins against Viswanathan Anand among several others in the blitz section.
