Ivan Saric has been the standard bearer for Croatian chess since 2012. Taught to play by his father at the age of five, Saric had several major successes in youth competitions. These include winning the U18 World Youth Championship and the U18 European Youth Championship, both in 2008.
Saric’s greatest success is winning the European Individual Championship in 2018. He was third in the same event in 2022. Saric also won the Challengers section of the 2014 Tata Steel Tournament, qualifying for the Masters section the following year. His most notable win is against Magnus Carlsen in the 2014 Chess Olympiad. Saric is the author of the well-received book and Chessable course The Open Sicilian. 2026 marks the sixth time he has played in the Croatian leg of the Grand Chess Tour.
