Radoslaw (Radek) Wojtaszek is a legend of Polish chess having won six national championships and represented his nation in Chess Olympiads since 2006. He first gained the attention of the chess world when he won the Under 18 section of the World Youth Championship in 2004. The following year he became a Grandmaster and, not long after, a second for Viswanathan Anand whom he assisted during the latter’s World Championship matches against Vladimir Kramnik (2008), Veselin Topalov (2010), Boris Gelfand (2012), and Magnus Carlsen (2013 and 2014). He also served as a member of Gukesh Dommaraju’s team for the World Chess Championship in 2024.
Wojtaszek, who married Russian International Master Alina Kashlinskaya in 2015, has had several outstanding performances in his career. They include taking first in the 2011 Gyorgy Marx Memorial with a 2900 performance and winning an individual silver medal on board one in the 2012 Chess Olympiad – his 8-2 result including victories over Hikaru Nakamura and Teimour Radjabov. Wojtaszek defeated Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana in the 2015 Tata Steel Masters and won the 2017 Dortmund Sparkassen ahead of Vladimir Kramnik. The following year he won the 2018 Isle of Man International ahead of the likes of Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand. Possibly Wojtaszek’s most important performance to date was leading Poland to a bronze medal in the 2017 World Team Championship, an event where he won individual gold on board one as well.
